Sexism, Ageism, Racism

Postby philip8 on April 12th, 2008, 10:22 pm

Three potential US presidents have opponents representing sexism, ageism, and racism.

In the US, which bias is msot prevalent and which is least prevelant, generally?

My opinion is the ranking of bigotry in the US from the greatest to the least is ageism, sexism, and racism.

I think this has to do with the ageing population in combination with our youth-oriented culture and, on the other extreme, the acceptance of different races throughout all segments of our culture.

What do you think and why?

I initially thought sexism. Of course, I am currently writing a thesis on feminism, so it is understandable that that would be my opinion. You said ageism..interesting. Are you a personal victim? As I write this, I seem to fuse the edges of the 3 together to make one, comprehensive -ism. Feminism isn't just for females; feminism is the voice of everyone oppressed, from the elderly being thrown out of the importance of this society to the perpetuating socialization of 'gender roles.' Which group is more oppressed? The elderly, minorities, or women? Perhaps sexism is the reason for the other 2. It would be easy to say that racism is the most prevalent, but I think sexism is the most universal. It rears its ugly head from every corner of our being. It affects everyone in every way imaginable. In summary, I believe sexism is an overshadowing blanket of every ism we have.

I'm not a victim of any of those isms. My parents are 89 and 92. But it has bothered that old people have become so marginalized and medical care so uncertain.

As I see it barriers for sex and race have come down over the last few decades, although obviously deep-seated prejudices persist.

I see it differently. I see predjudice and racism and ageism and sexism everywhere I look. I think it is still a HUGE problem in our society, and when my eyes were opened to it, it changed my view forever. Go pick up any magazine and see if you can't find every one of those -isms listed above pictured in there.

I think our elderly are suffering termendously because of this problem. They have worked their fingers to the bone their entire lives, and when they need us, we kick them to the curb. It doesn't matter that we are the wealthiest country in the world. We can't/won't take care of our own people.
